GRAND FALLS (GNB) – The provincial, federal and municipal governments are investing nearly $1.8 million in water and sewer infrastructure to support housing development in Grand Falls.
“Our government is listening to municipalities and investing in what matters to communities,” said Environment and Climate Change Minister Gilles LePage, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “By upgrading water and sewer services, we are enabling new housing in Grand Falls and ensuring the system is ready to support sustainable development well into the future.”
The project will involve relocating and replacing sanitary sewer infrastructure and upgrading water distribution and stormwater systems. These improvements will allow for the creation of about 40 housing units.
“Our government is investing in the infrastructure needed to build resilient communities with enough housing to accommodate our growing population,” said Madawaska-Restigouche MP Guillaume Deschênes-Thériault. “These upgrades will address critical environmental challenges while creating the conditions necessary for future residential development, supporting the long-term growth and prosperity of Grand Falls.”
Deschênes-Thériault attended for federal Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson.
The provincial government, through the Regional Development Corporation, is investing more than $593,000 in the project. The federal government is contributing more than $890,000 through the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund, and the municipality is investing more than $297,000.
“Grand Falls is proud to announce, in partnership with the federal and provincial governments, a total investment of $1,780,550 in the Taylor Street project to reroute a portion of the sanitary sewer network threatened by erosion,” said Mayor Bertrand Beaulieu. “This investment is a testament to the collaboration between all levels of government and the dedication of our municipal staff and council in protecting our community's infrastructure and reducing the financial burden on our citizens.”
