GRAND FALLS, March 19, 2025 – In an effort to improve access to healthcare and attract new doctors to the region, the Grand Falls Regional Municipality is proud to announce the creation of a scholarship in collaboration with the New Brunswick Medical Education Foundation Inc.
This scholarship, valued at $6,000 per year for four years, will be awarded annually to a medical student who meets the following criteria: bilingualism and a commitment to practicing as a family physician or emergency doctor at the Grand Falls General Hospital for at least four years following their academic training. The scholarship will be administered by the New Brunswick Medical Education Foundation Inc., which will act as the liaison between the recipient and the Municipality.
"Access to quality healthcare is a priority for our community. Currently, several family physicians and emergency doctor positions remain unfilled in our municipality, and nearly 2,000 residents are without a family doctor. In collaboration with the Vitalité Health Network, we are actively working to address this situation," stated Bertrand Beaulieu, Mayor of the Grand Falls Regional Municipality.
"By investing in the education of future doctors, we hope to strengthen our ability to recruit and retain healthcare professionals who can meet the urgent needs of our population," added Mayor Beaulieu.
To expand this initiative and offer a second scholarship under the same conditions, the Municipality is actively seeking additional partners and financial contributors, aiming to raise $10,000 per year for the next four years. In this regard, the Foundation of the Friends of the Grand Falls General Hospital has already confirmed its commitment of $3,000 per year for four years, demonstrating its support for the training and recruitment of new doctors, an essential step in improving healthcare services at the Grand Falls General Hospital.
